Today, on the occasion of Republic Day, I’d like to share some interesting facts about our tricolor.
The tricolor was officially adopted as the national flag of India by the Republic of India between August 15, 1947, and January 26, 1950, and has remained so since.
The ratio of the width to the length of the Indian National Flag is 2:3.
In the center of the white stripe, there is a dark blue circle, known as the Ashoka Chakra, which is derived from the Lion Pillar of Sarnath, the capital of Ashoka.
The first Republic Day parade took place in 1955. The national flag has undergone several changes, and its initial design is credited to Pingali Venkayya.
However, before that, there were other versions of our flag. The first national flag in India is believed to have been hoisted at Parsi Bagan Square (Green Park) in Kolkata on August 7, 1906.
This flag had three horizontal stripes of red, yellow, and green. The present tricolor flag was finally established in 1947.
The colors and their order remained the same. Instead of Ashoka’s religious Chakra on the white stripe, only the spinning wheel symbol was retained. On July 22, 1947, the Constituent Assembly officially adopted it as the national flag of independent India.
